About the Book Absences records, through the eyes of an unusually sensitive and precocious child, an exploration into the nature of "absence" and how it transforms people with its touch. The novel begins with a Prologue, in which the protagonist's father tells his story. Over the course of time, the child becomes a teenager and leaves his home town and looks back at the ritual of absences objectively. Despite being a child, the narrator is clear-sighted enough not to miss adult decisions and their consequences. And sometimes he senses the effects that these decisions have on his own life. For him, absences are the cross currents in growing up and his relations with the adults around him. The story shifts back and forth, chronicling the many arrivals, deaths and departures which slowly but inevitably build up to their natural climax in yet another monologue of the protagonist's father-the Epilogue of the novel-on his own encounters with "absences" as a harsh but necessary part of our earthly existence. About the Author Bibhu Padhi has published eight books of poetry. His work has appeared in distinguished magazines and anthologies throughout the English-speaking world. Absences is his first novel.
