A collection of pieces by the author that have appeared in the Hindu and the Statesman over the years, A Peep Into Delhi's Ethos deftly captures India's capital and its myriad hues through the eyes of someone who fell in love with Delhi from the first time he set foot in it. The city has changed in many ways since then, but its monuments and the sights and sounds of the walled city remain. The famous kabab-maker Kala Baba may be dead, and the legendary panwallah Karim may have disappeared, but the gawwalis still enliven Thursday evenings at the shrine of Hazart Kalimullah, in this indomitable city. Ronald Vivian Smith began writing in 1954 under the guidance of his late father, Thomas Smith, a well-known journalist. He joined the Press Trust of India, New Delhi, as a reporter and editor, and later began working with The Statesman, retiring as news editor in 1996. His interest in the history of Delhi continues. He writes a column, 'Quaint Corner' for his former paper, and one called 'Down Memory Lane' for the Hindu. He is also the author of The Delhi That No One Knows; Uncanny Tales; The Taj: Myth and Reality; Shima, a romantic novel; Delhi: Historical Glimpses and The Christian Link: Delhi, Agra and Beyond, written in collaboration with his father.
