The progressive disease in which heart muscle weakens and is unable to pump blood to the rest of the body is known as cardiomyopathy. There are four major types of cardiomyopathy, namely, dilated cardiomyopathy, hypertrophic cardiomyopathy, arrhythmogenic right ventricular dysplasia, and restrictive cardiomyopathy. It shows symptoms such as weakness, shortness of breath, dizziness, chest pain, high blood pressure and edema. It can be diagnosed by chest X-ray, echocardiogram, electrocardiogram, treadmill stress test, cardiac catheterization, cardiac MRI and CT scan, blood test, and genetic screening. The treatments for cardiomyopathy include medications, septal ablation, radiofrequency ablation, septal myectomy, and nonsurgical implanted devices such as implantable cardioverter-defibrillator, ventricular assist device, and pacemaker.
