Democratisation as a process goes far beyond periodic elections and representative government. It covers social, economic and cultural issues of our daily life and activities. W h i l e a d d r e s s i n g t h e p r o c e s s o f democratisation gender equality, ethnic and identity politics, traditional norms and practices, peace education, civil society in the North East (NE) etc., how the process has reflected over the space has become a highly debatable issue. That is, whether customary laws and practices, and traditional institutions are democratic enough in their structures and functions. (IV) To highlight some challenges for processing of democratisation in the NE. This volume brings together papers presented at the two-day national seminar held at the Conference Hall of ICSSR-NERC, NEHU Campus Shillong in the year 2013. The contributors critically analyse and bring out pertinent issues that directly or indirectly determine and affect the process of democratisation in the NE.
