The third edition of the book is now presented incorporating the essential changes required in the text matter in most of the chapters conforming to the revised Indian Standard Code IS : 456-2000. The new revised code emphasises the importance of Limit State Design Philosophy for reinforced concrete structural elements while the traditional working stress design is incorporated in the Annexure-B of the new code. Consequently the design examples are presented according to the limit state design procedure enshrined in the new code. Most of the chapters have been completely revised with design examples based on the limit state design procedure. In addition the use of SP: 16 design charts and tables for rapid design of reinforced concrete structural members generally used in design offices by structural engineers is also presented in some typical design examples. About the Author N. Krishna Raju Emeritus Professor of Civil Engineering MS Ramaiah Institute of Technology Bangalore earned his BE degree from University of Mysore MSc (Engg) from University of Madras and PhD from University of Leeds (UK) as a Commonwealth Scholar. He has taught at College of Engineering Guindy Chennai Regional Engineering College Calicut Lanchester College of Technology Coventry (UK) Indian Institute of Science Bangalore and the Karnataka Regional Engineering College Surathkal. He had been a Visiting Professor at University of Basrah (Iraq) during 1979-82. Prof. Krishna Raju has written over 60 research papers in reputed journals and monographs entitled Design of Concrete Mixes Design of Reiniorced Concrete Structures Advanced Reinforced Concrete Design Prestressed Concrete Design of Bridges Design and Drawing of Reinforced Concrete and Steel Structures Numerical Methods for Engineering Problems and Advanced Mechanics of Solids and Structures. He is a member of the Institution of Structural Engineers London (UK) the Institution of Engineers (India) and the Indian Concrete Institute. He is the recipient of several awards prominent among them being Sir Bowen Memorial Prize Garudacharya and Krishna Iyengar Gold Medals from University of Mysore UP Government National Award for Excellence in Technical Authorship Birla Super Endowment Award Eminent Civil Engineers Award George Oomen Memorial Prize Institution of Engineers Prize and the Naghadi Award.
