The narrator of the story has gone to live in Starkfield during the winter when he sets out to learn about the life of Ethan Frome. Frome had been injured in an accident that took place twenty-four years ago, and is described as "the most striking figure in Starkfield" or "the ruin of a man". Upon failing in getting information from the townspeople, he hires Frome as a driver for a week. On one of these days, they get caught in a severe snowstorm and Frome is forced to take the narrator home for that night. The story then moves on to Ethan's life story and why he is the way he is. It flashes back twenty-four years. It starts off with Ethan's love for Mattie, his wife's cousin, who stays with them and helps them around the house. He is desperate to find a way to talk to her and tell her of his feelings. As the story goes, Ethan has made his feelings for Mattie very clear and Zeena, his wife, does not approve of this and wants to find a way to get rid of her.
