Guru Nanak found the Sikh faith at a time when Mughal rule in India was flourishing. Despite much resistance and violence, he influenced many Hindus to convert to Sikhism largely through its doctrine of caste equality. The third guru, Amar Das, took his legacy even further, introducing reforms for the emancipation of women and the lower castes. In Search of Roots traces the lineage of the Khatri Bhallas. It makes a study of the teachings of Amar Das, himself a Bhalla, as well as the earlier gurus, and examines whether their legacy did indeed flourish under their descendants. An integrated analysis of history, religion, biography and genealogy, In Search of Roots compares and contrasts the religious politics of pre-Mughal and Mughal rulers, and analyses the history and economy of the towns and cities of the Punjab, such as Goindwal, Ferozepur and Jalandhar, which is rarely found in existing literature. The industrious Bhallas travelled far and wide and their emigration to Kenya, Canada, the United Kingdom and the United States of America in the twentieth century is discussed in the context of a broader Indian diaspora. A well-written and extensively researched book, In Search of Roots is a unique study of history and genealogy in the Indian subcontinent. About the Author Dr. A. S.
