Jane Eyre's story begins with her life at her maternal uncle's house, where she lives in accordance with his dying wish. Jane is only ten years old and only Mr. Reed cares for her. His wife treats her badly once he too is gone. The nursemaid Bessie seems to be Jane's only companion in the house. After a particularly bad episode with her cousin John, Jane faints and is brought to the kind apothecary, Mr. Lloyd, who recommends that she be sent to school. She is sent to Lowood Institution, a charity school for girls, and put under the eye of Mr. Brocklehurst, the harsh director of the school. Six years later, she leaves the school and offers her services as a governess. Her journey brings her to Alice Fairfax, the housekeeper at Thornfield Hall, where she meets Adele Varens, a young French girl she must now tutor. She soon notices Edward Rochester, the master of the house and begins to learn that Mr. Rochester is a mysterious man. Mysterious, and particularly charming, for she can't seem to stop thinking about him. However, Mr. Rochester has a secret that he hides from everyone, one that could diminish his pride, wealth and perhaps everything he has worked towards.
