Gaban follows the life of Ramanath, young man and his wife Jalpa. Ramanath adores his wife and leaves no stone unturned to satisfy her lust for jewelry. He eventually falls in debt and gets involved in illegal financial dealings. Doing so, he loses all hopes of coming out of the mess and runs away without asking his family for help and support. Jalpa is a brave woman, and she is desperate to find her husband and get him out of his misery.
Godaan is a story set in pre-independent India. It follows the life of a poor farmer, Horiram, and struggle of his family to survive. Horiram always wanted to own a cow, which is a necessity for farmers. He does everything in his capacity to be able to fulfill his wish and provide his family a better living. It is a touching story, which offers an insight into the social problems of colonial India and brings out human emotions in all its rawness.
Nirmala is a story of Nirmala, a fifteen-year-old teenager who is a victim of child marriage. She is forced into marrying an elderly widower almost her father's age, due to the sudden death of her father. The story proceeds with her struggle to survive with three elderly sons and his widowed sister. Nirmala is a poignant story, which reflects the plight of women in colonial India.

Munshi Premchand was an Indian writer famous for modern Hindustani Literature. Born as Dhanpat Rai Srivastava, he began writing under the pen name Nawab Rai but later switched to Premchand. He is referred to as Upanyas Samrat by most Hindi writers. He is a novelist, short story writer and a dramatist. He has authored novels like Kishna, Roothi Rani, Pratigya, etc.
