Excerpt from Initia Latina: A Latin Book for Beginners This book is in tended to supply the needful grammar, translation, and exercises for a boy beginning Latin, either at home or at a preparatory school. It covers the same ground and employs the same vocabulary as the first 26 exercises of the writer's Exercises in Latin. Prose, and is designed to meet the wishes of some teachers who have felt that this earliest stage requires fuller treatment. It is assumed that the beginner will have first learnt to tell the parts of Speech in his own language, and the book deals with the Latin Simple Sentence and with Accidence to the end of the Regular Verbs. A suitable portion of grammar is printed with each lesson, and the whole of the Accidence used is summarised in clear print on a few pages at the end of the book. The special vocabularies given in the lessons are intended to be learnt, and the exercises to be written without further help.
