Pride And Prejudice is a novel set in turn of the nineteenth century England. It centers around the Bennet family and the social class distinctions and prejudices that were characteristic of those times.
Summary Of The Book
Pride And Prejudice follows the fortunes of the Bennet family, the parents and five daughters. Mr. Bennet is a scholarly and somewhat aloof man who does not concern himself too much with family responsibilities. Mrs. Bennet’s main concern in life is to find suitable matches for her five daughters. She is a bit lacking in social graces.
Her eldest daughter Jane is gentle, kind and beautiful. The second daughter, Elizabeth is spirited and independent. She is a lot like her father, intelligent and witty. Mary is quiet and devout. The last two girls, Kitty and Lydia are a bit flirty.
When an eligible young bachelor, Mr. Bingley, moves into the neighborhood, it stirs up excitement. Mr. Bingley soon begins to show an interest in Jane whom he meets at a ball. His friend Mr. Darcy does not make a favorable impression with his haughty manner.
Mr. Collins, a clergyman who is related to the Bennets, arrives for a visit and wants to choose one of the Bennet girls as his wife. Elizabeth is amused by his self-important attitude and turns him down when he proposes to her. Meanwhile, just when it seems that Mr. Bingley would propose to Jane, he leaves the house he has rented, Netherfield Parks, and moves back to London.
Jane makes the acquaintance of a young army officer, Wickham, who tells her that Darcy cheated him out of his inheritance. She also learns that Darcy played a part in persuading Charles Bingley not to continue his relationship with Jane.
All this adds to her dislike and when Darcy suddenly proposes to her, she rejects him, accusing him of ruining Jane’s happiness and Mr. Wickham’s life. Darcy later manages to convince Elizabeth that he thought he was acting in the best interest for all concerned. As for Wickham, it becomes apparent that he was lying about his inheritance. Elizabeth begins to reconsider her feelings for Darcy, but she is still unsure, not liking his condescending attitude towards her.
Pride And Prejudice has sold over 20 million copies since its publication in 1813. The book has been adapted to numerous films and plays.
