Weighing - The operation of weighing consists in a com parison of the quantity of matter in the substance to be examined, or in other words its mass, with that of a certain standard. The standards both of weights and of measures which are in general use in this country are excessively arbitrary and complicated; in this book we Shall always employ the metric system, which has many advantages over the British system, and is universally employed for scientific purposes.
