Short stories

Translated from Bengali to English, the stories contained in this anthology depict the human condition in its myriad forms – innocence and childhood, the natural and the mystical, love and loss, the city and the village. Prominent among the stories in this collection is Kabuliwala, which has been adapted as a movie. Selected Stories also gives a deep insight into the socio-economic conditions that were predominant in Colonial Bengal.

About Rabindranath Tagore

Rabindranath Tagore was an Indian poet, writer, and philosopher. His writings are considered the epitome of Bengali literature and several of his short stories and novels have been translated into many languages and have subsequently been adapted into hit movies. He is best remembered for: Gora, Kabuliwala, and Chokher Bali. He was the first non-European to win the Nobel Prize for Literature, largely for the English translation of the Gitanjali. He was also conferred a knighthood by the British Empire which he renounced to protest against the Jallianwala Bagh Massacre.
