Some of the evil of my tale may have been inherent in our circumstances...We were a self -centered army without parade or gesture, devoted to freedom, the second of man's creeds, a purpose so ravenous that it devoured all our strength, a hope so transcendent that our earlier ambitions faded in its glare.' Written by T.E. Lawrence, better known as Lawrence of Arabia, Seven Pillars of Wisdom (1922) is an autobiographical account of the Arab revolt against the Ottoman Turks during the First World War. A narrative of war and adventure, one written with political acumen and extraordinary sensitivity, this book chronicles an epic historical event seen from the eyes of one of the twentieth century's most fascinating soldier-poets. About the Author T.E. Lawrence was born in Wales in 1888. He was educated at the University of Oxford and, in 1911, he joined the British Museum excavations in northern Syria. Following the outbreak of the First World War, he was posted to Cairo as an intelligence officer. He was a liaison officer during the Arab Revolt where he played a pivotal role in organizing the rebel forces. He later joined the RAF where he served for over twelve years. He died in 1935, following a motor-cycle accident, at the age of forty-six. By the time of his death, he was already considered one of the most enigmatic figures of the twentieth century.
