Stoops to conquer' is a famous phrase from Aphra Behn's play The Rover. She Stoops to Conquer is the story of a wealthy Londoner Charles Marlow and a lovely lady called Kate. Kate is the daughter of another wealthy man in the town, Mr. Hardcastle, who wants her to wed Marlow. But Kate soon realizes that Marlow is comfortable only with women from the lower-classes and is nervous when upper-class ladies are around him. She hence pretends to be a maid, to make him fall in love with her. The play has a timeless appeal, and is studied as a part of academic literature in the US and the UK, and is performed even to this day.
