Veerappa Moily was born in coastal Karnataka and owing to his poverty, struggled hard to get education. He finally earned his Bachelors degree from Mysore University and Law degree from Bangalore University. After serving in many ministerial posts, he served as the Chief Minister of Karnataka from 1992 to 1994. He is currently the Cabinet Minister for Law, Justice and Company Affairs in the Government of India. He has written extensively in both Kannada and English. Having authored various books, plays, poetry collections and compilation of his lectures, Shree Ramayana Mahanveshanam in Kannada is his most ambitious work to date. Some of the major awards bestowed on him are: Moortidevi Award (2010), Dr. B. R. Ambedkar Award (2002), Devaraja Urs Prashasti (2001) and Honorary Doctorate Degrees by Mangalore University (2009), Russian Academy (2009) and National Law University, Hyderabad (2009).
