Research methods: general
Research Design, published in 2011, is now in its third edition. It focuses on qualitative, quantitative, and mixed methods that are used in research. The author starts off by explaining philosophical assumptions and then gradually moves on to the presentation of research. Side-by-side, he also explains the three different methodologies involved in research.
The book is divided into two parts. The first part is titled Preliminary Considerations and has chapters like Review Of The Literature, and Writing Strategies And Ethical Considerations. This edition of the textbook has updated information on the topic of ethics.
The second part, Designing Research, has a total of eight chapters. The first five focus on purpose statements, hypotheses, and usage of theory. The last three are titled Quantitative Methods, Qualitative Procedures, and Mixed Methods Procedures. Every chapter starts with the basic principles of the subject and then provides examples from Social and Human Sciences articles and dissertations. Tips and highlights have also been weaved into the text. The end of each chapter has exercises for readers to solve.
Creswell has written a book that is user-friendly and straightforward. Though Research Design has been written for students of research design and research methods, it can be easily used as a reference guide by undergraduate students of other disciplines as well, such as those in doctoral programs. Research Design has been presented in a format in which readers can begin with the simpler topics and slowly move towards the more complex ones. This makes it easy for them to grasp the fundamentals of the subject.
In addition to the text, websites have been provided for further inquiries.
