The eighteenth century was a tragic period in the history of India, marked by political disintegration, administrative confusion, economic decline and social anarchy. In this volume these different aspects have been described by the author critically with profuse details on the basis of contemporary original documents and other accounts including the detailed Persian works like Siyar-ul-Muntakharin by Ghulam Husain, Khulasat-ul-Tawarikh by Kalyan Singh, Riyaz-us-Salatin by Ghulam Husain Salim of Maldah, Dastur-ul-Insha, compiled by Munshi Vijayram of Lucknow in 1769 and Ahwal-i-Aliwardi Khan by Yusuf Ali Khan. Contemporary Bengali Literature has been critically utilised. Old and modern Journals, Gazetteers and Newspapers have been duly scrutinized. After writing an Introductory chapter the author has described the trends of Religious thought in chapter One, State of Education in chapter Two, Social Life in chapter Three, Commercial Relations, external and internal, in chapter Four, Agriculture and Industries in chapter Five, Economic Drain in chapter Six, Currency and Banking in chapter Seven. He has added several Appendices from original documents and an exhaustive Bibliography. This volume is an important and valuable contribution for the study of India's Religion, Social Life and Economic condition during a highly critical period in her history, when exhausted from within, she was confronted with new forces from the West.
