Prepare students for an increasingly flat world—a place where diverse people from divergent cultures learn and work together rather than in isolation. Learn specific steps to globalize your classroom, and move beyond the call for students to memorize material to instead encourage higher-order thinking. These ideas, assignments, projects, and assessments are all wrapped in a 21st century skills framework.

William Kist

William Kist, an associate professor at Kent State University, has been researching classroom uses of new media for over a decade. Growing out of his own experience as a high school English teacher, his profiles of teachers who are broadening our conception of literacy were included in his first book, New Literacies in Action, and have been expanded in his second book, The Socially Networked Classroom, focusing on the uses of Web 2.0 in the classroom. His new book, forthcoming from Solution Tree Press, spotlights teachers who are reaching out with their students to connect internationally using new media. With over fifty articles or book chapters to his credit, Kist and has been sought out for interviews in the popular press regarding new literacies including such publications as U.S. News and World, The Observer (UK), and Education Week s Digital Directions; he also reviews books for the Cleveland Plain Dealer and is a member of the National Book Critics Circle. Remaining active in video production work over the years, Dr. Kist is the recipient of an Ohio Educational Broadcasting Network Commission (OEBIE) Honorable Mention for the documentary The Learning Age and a regional Emmy Award nomination for outstanding achievement in music composition for the documentary series Our Family.
