Tibetan Tale of Love and Magic is essentially the life story of a Tibetan highwayman around the beginning of this century, which he told to Alexandra David-Neel, prompted by the peculiar circumstances of their meeting. Although written in novel form, as the author explains in her preface, this is 'a true story, which has been lived'. Her straightforward reportage is both factual and fantastic and synonymous with the mysteries of Tibetan magic.
Alexandra David-Neel (1868-1869), born in Paris to a socially prominent family, once boasted, "I learned to run before I could walk!" In the course of a lifetime of more than one hundred years, she was an acclaimed operatic soprano, a political anarchist, a religious reformer, an interpid explorer who traveled in Tibet for fourteen years, a scholar of Buddhism, and the author of more than forty books. But perhaps the most intriguing of all her adventures was the spiritual search that lead her from a youthful interest in socialism and Freemasonary to the teachings of the great sages in India and culminated into her initiation into the secret tantric practices of Tibetan Buddhism.
