Wuthering Heights follows the life of Heathcliff, from his childhood to his death in his late thirties. Mr. Earnshaw travels to Liverpool where he finds a homeless, gypsy-like boy, and decides to adopt him. He gets him to Wuthering Heights and names him Heathcliff. Hindley, finds himself deprived of his father's love and affection and quickly learns to hate him. On the other hand, Heathcliff and Catherine spend most of their time together and hate every moment apart. Heathcliff was brought up well by his adopted family, but after Mr. Earnshaw dies and Hindley returns from college he starts treating Heathcliff cruelly and his status gets reduced to that of a servant. He runs away when Catherine decides to marry someone else. Heathcliff returns later, rich and educated, and sets about gaining his revenge on the two families that he believed ruined his life.
