A significant amount of faulty information has been perpetuated by some large textbook companies that have dominated the nursing market for several years, mainly because of colorful illustrations. I recently thumped through two best sellers. I was curious to see how the authors handled the thorny problem of a simple explanation of the relationship of thyroid disease to the immune system. In the first book, nothing was said about thyroid disease. In fact, hypothyroidism and hyperthyroidism were not mentioned at all only a vague phrase about the hormone, thyroxin and the ‘basal book, the hypo and hyper conditions were mentioned, In the second book, the hypo- and hyper – conditions were mentioned, but the diagnostic test described, the protein made in either book of immune mechanisms and thyroid problems.
