Ischemic stroke, also known as brain ischemia and cerebral ischemia, is one of the 3 types of stroke. It is caused by blockage in an artery that supplies blood to the brain. The blockage lowers the flow of blood and oxygen to the brain, which leads to the damage or death of brain cells. It can also be caused by a heart attack or carbon monoxide poisoning. Some of the symptoms of ischemic stroke are weakness or paralysis, dizziness, vertigo, confusion, loss of coordination, and drooping of the face on one side. Ischemic stroke can be diagnosed by a combination of tests such as a physical exam, blood sugar test, cranial computerized tomography, magnetic resonance imaging, electrocardiogram, echocardiography, and angiography. The first treatment for ischemic stroke attempts to restore breathing, heart rate, and blood pressure. The main treatment involves tissue plasminogen activator and surgery.
