जॉस्टिन गार्डर का जन्म नार्वे की राजधानी ओस्लो में 8 अगस्त, 1952 को एक शिक्षक परिवार में हुआ था। लेखक बनने का निर्णय उन्होंने 19 वर्ष की आयु में लिया और बाल-साहित्य की रचना प्रारम्भ कर दी। जॉस्टिन गार्डर का कहना है कि वह दोस्तोयेव्स्की, हरमन हैस, जार्ज लुई बोर्गेस तथा नार्वेजन लेखक नुत हैमरसन से प्रभावित हुए। उनका पहला कहानी-संग्रह 'निदान तथा अन्य कहानियाँ' 1986 में प्रकाशित हुआ। तदुपरान्त उनके दो उपन्यास—'द फ्राग कैसल' (1988) तथा 'द सॉलिटेयर मिस्ट्री' (1990) में प्रकाशित हुए। जॉस्टिन गार्डर लगभग दो दशकों के लिए ओस्लो में एक कॉलेज में दर्शनशास्त्र विषय के अध्यापक रहे। 'सोफी का संसार' की अभूतपूर्व सफलता के पश्चात उन्होंने अपना पूरा समय लेखन को समर्पित करने का निर्णय लिया। तब से अब तक उनके 13 से अधिक उपन्यास तथा बाल-साहित्य कृतियाँ प्रकाशित हो चुकी हैं। जॉस्टिन गार्डर को 'सोफी का संसार' तथा अन्य पुस्तकों के लिए अनेक अन्तर्राष्ट्रीय पुरस्कारों द्वारा सम्मानित किया जा चुका है।.
