Night is an unnerving autobiographical account by elie wiesel, who, as a teenager survived nazi german concentration camps at auschwitz and buchenwald in 1944-45 at the height of the holocaust toward the end of world war ii. moving away from a simple narration of extreme terror he experienced, wiesel very eloquently questions his philosophical and religious existence by dismissing the existence of a god, and declares his intense hatred for all of humanity. the central focus remains on the heartbreaking depiction of the complex parent-child relationship between elie and his father. wiesel's painfully honest and terribly realistic narration is both intriguing and unsettling, and manages to relentlessly push the reader out of his traditional role of an observer to that of an active participant.
