The Danskrit Bhagavad Gita (assigned in its present from to the 3rd century B.C.) marks the claim to be the summary and final exposition of the Vedanta, which itself was the exposition of the Vedas. The latter two represent a philosophic and religious evolution extending over many thousands of years and containing some of the most ancient records preserved by civilised man. Together they fill - even when closely printed - larger bookshelf. And when we mention that the Gita is a poem of only 700 stanzas or 2800 lines, it can be imagined how compact and concentrated it is. In itself it is the pivot of the whole Upanishadic literature, and the starting point- as modern scholars argue - of Buddhism, whose adherents number nearly one third of the human race. In addition it summarizes and arbitrates between two contemporary Indian philosophies: to wit, the SANKHYA and the YOGA, synthesizing both in a higher unity.
