Biology & Life Sciences

The first book of its type, Chiral Paleontology explores cases of biotic asymmetry and chirality in the fossil record. Fascinating cases of asymmetry occur throughout the fossil record, spanning the last 600 million years. Chiral phenomena and asymmetry have significance for biological systems, from the development of asymmetric plant morphology to the structure of the human brain. Chiral Paleontology's chapters focus on the analysis of fossil and modern asymmetries in Ediacarans, arthropods, snails, brachiopods, ammonites, fish, amphibians, dinosaurs, and cetaceans and other mammals. Special attention is devoted to new data from developmental biology, and how these data influence our understanding of the role of chirality and asymmetry in biology and paleobiology. Chiral Paleontology will be of interest to developmental biologists, paleontologists, and medical professionals.
