Physics

This book, written specifically for use by advanced undergraduate and first year graduate students, provides a detailed problematic approach to the study of the fundamental mathematical and physical principles of the latest applications in the field of optics. It begins with the study of geometric optics, covering paraxial ray optics, third-order aberration and characteristic functions. The formulas for aberrations are derived from first principles using Luneberg's treatment starting from Hamilton's equations. The rest of the book is devoted to the modern physical optics. The subjects covered include diffraction, coherance, fourier optics and holography, as well as the salient aspects of sell-focussing of light beams, graded index optical waveguides and evanescent waves and the Goos-hanchen effect.
