यशपाल का जन्म 3 दिसम्बर, 1903 को फ़िरोजपुर छावनी, पंजाब में हुआ। उनकी प्रारम्भिक शिक्षा गुरुकुल कांगड़ी, डी.ए.वी. स्कूल, लाहौर और फिर मनोहर लाल हाईस्कूल में हुई। 1921 में वहीं से प्रथम श्रेणी में मैट्रिक की परीक्षा उत्तीर्ण की। प्रारम्भिक जीवन रोमांचक कथाओं के नायकों-सा रहा। भगत सिंह, सुखदेव, बोहरा और आजाद के साथ क्रान्तिकारी कार्यों में खुलकर भाग लिया। 1931 में हिन्दुस्तान समाजवादी प्रजातंत्र सेना के सेनापति चन्द्रशेखर आजाद के मारे जाने पर सेनापति नियुक्त। 1932 में पुलिस के साथ एक मुठभेड़ में गिरफ्तार। 1938 में जेल से छूटे। तब से जीवनपर्यन्त लेखन कार्य में संलग्न रहे। उनकी प्रमुख प्रकाशित कृतियाँ हैं—झूठा सच : वतन और देश, झूठा सच : देश का भविष्य, मेरी तेरी उसकी बात, देशद्रोही, दादा कामरेड, मनुष्य के रूप, दिव्या, अमिता, बारह घंटे, अप्सरा का शाप (उपन्यास); लैम्प शेड, धर्मयुद्ध, ओ भैरवी, उत्तराधिकारी, चित्र का शीर्षक, अभिशप्त, वो दुनिया, ज्ञानदान, पिंजरे की उड़ान, तर्क का तूफान, भस्माकृत चिंगारी, फूलो का कुर्ता, तुमने क्यों कहा था मैं सुन्दर हूँ, उत्तमी की माँ, खच्चर और आदमी, भूख के तीन दिन (कहानी-संग्रह); यशपाल का यात्रा साहित्य और कथा नाटक, लोहे की दीवार के दोनों ओर, राह बीती, स्वर्गोद्यान बिना साँप (यात्रा-वृत्तान्त); मेरी जेल डायरी (डायरी); यशपाल के निबन्ध (दो खंड), राम-राज्य की कथा, गांधीवाद की शव परीक्षा, मार्क्सवाद, देखा, सोचा, समझा, चक्कर क्लब, बात-बात में बात, न्याय का संघर्ष, बीबी जी कहती हैं मेरा चेहरा रौबीला है, जग का मुजरा, मैं और मेरा परिवेश, यशपाल का विप्लव (राजनीति/निबन्ध/व्यंग्य); सिंहावलोकन (सम्पूर्ण 1-4) (दस्तावेज) नशे नशे की बात (संस्मरण); यशपाल रचनावली। उन्हें ‘देव पुरस्कार’, ‘सोवियत लैंड नेहरू पुरस्कार’, ‘मंगला प्रसाद पारितोषिक’, ‘साहित्य अकादेमी पुरस्कार’, ‘साहित्य वारिधि’, ‘पद्मभूषण’ आदि से सम्मानित किया गया। निधन : 26 दिसम्बर, 1976
