This is the first comprehensive historical document recording authentic facts about Mahatma Gandhi’s visit to Mauritius at the turn of the twentieth century. Gandhi was still in South Africa and a relatively unknown man when he visited Mauritius, the Indian Ocean Island predominantly inhabited by Indian indentured population. When did Gandhi reach Mauritius? How many days did he spend there? Where did he go, where did he stay and when did he leave? These and other related questions have been dealt with insightfully by the author. The systematic falsification of facts of the subject by B. Bissoondoyal and a whole lot of Mauritian writers regarding the whereabouts of Mahatma Gandhi in Mauritius and the motivated myth that was given wide publicity by these people, have been exposed on the strength of extensive research work undertaken by the prolific scholar. Mahatma Gandhi arrived in Mauritius on October 29th 1901. He was the guest of Ahmed Goolam Mohammed. He paid a visit to the Supreme Court of Mauritius on November 5th. On November 9th, he was invited to the Governor’s residence at Le Reduit to participate in a banquet given in honour of the king of England, Edward the Seventh. The Muslim traders of Port Louis gave another banquet in honour of M. K. Gandhi at Taher Bagh on November 13th, and he left Mauritius on November 15th 1901 at five O’clock in the evening. Pahlad Ramsurrun has justified his findings by providing solid references from marine notices published in the newspapers of those days and he has given authentic evidences contained in allied documents that are preserved in the National Archives of Mauritius.
