Economy of Bengal was based on agriculture. The latter was again the gift of her numerous rivers. Distribution of population was, to a large extent, governed by rivers. It was then natural that the decay of the river systems will bring about a change in the existing economic set-up of the country as well as population distribution. The book is a pioneering attempt to study systematically the above facts on the basis of maps and relevant data.
