This is the fifth and final volume in a series which provides the texts of the Fortnightly Reports sent by Governors of the Punjab to the Viceroy. Other key documents sent by the Governor or his Secretary are also included. There are 153 items in total. The volume opens with the annoucement ofthe Mountbatten Plan on 3 June 1947 which provided theme, therefore,of this volume is the making of arrangements for the division of the Province. The was far from straightforward with both Mountbatten and the political leaders become strained. These final administrative moves took place against a deteriorating communal situation with continual bombings, murders and stabings. The daily situation telegrams which are included show how the coming of partition brought tragedy to the lives of ordinary people.
