Of late, the business environment of developing countries has become increasingly more turbulent, dynamic and complex. In order to compete in the global markets. Indian manufacturers need to acquire world-class status irrespective of the fact that whether they are a domestic player or an exporter. Needless to mention though that to achieve a world-class status is a great opportunity for those who can make it, and for others, it poses a serious threat. Thought to some extent Indian industry has realised this and risen to the challenge, its battle for survival and growth has just begun. The success of Indian manufacturing in meeting this challenge will depend on its readiness to move itself from a protected domestic to world-class global manufacturing status quickly and confidently.
Our key objectives in writing this book has been essentially to address this segment of the industry, but we also hope we have put together something that would be of interest to all practising managers and professionals.
The key issue that this book sets out to address are:
The relevance and basics of World-Class Manufacturing (WCM)
The current state of Indian manufacturing
Issues of performance measurement
A road map for World-Class Manufacturing
An effort has been made to present the theory and practices of WCM without smothering the reader with jargon or hype. In fact, the objective is to help the reader to look beyond the clutter of Three Letter Acronyms (TLAs), understand concepts and focus on actions for improvement. The book will be useful to policy makers, practitioners and academics.
