RABINDRANATH TAGORE’S reflections on Assam were, for a long time, scattered across letters, essays, speeches and passing observations—half-hidden, fragmented and often overlooked. Usharanjan Bhattacharya’s acclaimed Bengali work Neel Shonalir Bani, which has been translated into English as A Quiet Romance: Rabindranath Tagore and Assam by Haimanti Mitra, brings together those dispersed impressions and restores them with historical clarity and literary depth. Tagore’s writings contain vivid references to the Himalayan foothills, dense forests, reflections on Assamese society, its linguistic plurality and the respectful coexistence between Assamese and Bengali cultural spheres. He recognised the reciprocal admiration between Assamese and Bengali writers and acknowledged the significant contribution of leading Assamese litterateurs who shaped the region’s intellectual and literary contours. This work offers an in-depth analysis of the literary environments of Assam and Bengal during this period—an era in which journals, correspondence, translations, songs and criticism created a thriving space for dialogue. It also highlights how the Tagore household—through Santiniketan, Visva-Bharati, cultural initiatives and personal relationships—played a pivotal role in nurturing this atmosphere of literary exchange.
