This book assembles a wide-ranging collection of articles written in honor of one of the outstanding historians of India, Dietmar Rothermund. The first part, which is dedicated to India's foreign relations, not only with Germany, but also with her neighbours in the Indian Ocean, is followed by a close look at the relationship between states, courts and religion in premodern contexts. Hermann Kulke retired as Professor of South and Southeast Asian History in the Department of History, Kiel University in 2003. He is co-author of A History of India (with D. Rothermund), co-editor of The Cult of Jagannath and the Regional Tradition of Orissa (with A. Eschmann and G.C. Tripathi) and of Hinduism Reconsidered (with G.D. Sontheimer) and editor of The State in India 1000-1600. He is also co-editor of the series Studies in Orissan Society, Culture and History.
