Korean Tales is a first‑hand English translation of Korean folklore complemented by an introductory overview of late 19th‑century Korea. Allen—an American missionary, physician, and diplomat—collected these stories to challenge Western misconceptions of Koreans as “semi‑savage,” showcasing their cultural depth and moral values. The collection features beloved legends like “Sim Chung: The Dutiful Daughter,” “Chun Yang: The Faithful Dancing‑Girl,” “Hyung Bo and Nahl Bo” (Heungbu & Nolbu), and “Hong Kil Tong” (Hong Gildong). Spanning animal tales, supernatural myths, and moral dramas, it paints a vivid portrait of Korean society, its beliefs, and folklore’s enduring lessons

Horace Newton Allen

Horace Newton Allen was an American physician, Protestant missionary, and diplomat pivotal in Korea’s modernization. Arriving in Korea in September 1884, he earned the trust of King Gojong by treating a royal relative injured in the Gapsin Coup, leading to the creation of Chejungwon—Korea’s first Western hospital—on his recommendation, and the first Western medical school in Seoul in 1885. His writings, including Korean Tales (1889) and Things Korean (1908), helped introduce Korean culture to the English-speaking world.
