Rip Van Winkle walks into the mountains one day and meets some strange old men. He comes home twenty years later. One dark night, Ichabod Crane is riding home and sees a man on a black horse behind him. The man has no head. Are there ghosts in these stories? What do you think?

Washington Irving

Washington Irving was an influential American writer best known for his short stories and as a pioneer of American literature. His famous tale, The Legend of Sleepy Hollow (1820), introduced readers to the eerie character of the Headless Horseman and captured early American folklore. Irving's works, which also include Rip Van Winkle, combined humor, vivid descriptions, and a sense of the supernatural, helping to establish a uniquely American literary identity in the 19th century.
