The story of human migration is as old as the story of Homo sapiens. The search for more living space has sometimes spawned unrest and conflict. Most prominent in this regard has been the migration from China and Bangladesh that has gained momentum over the past several decades.
Hiranya Bhattacharyya
Hiranya Kumar Bhattacharyya is an ex-IPS officer of the Assam cadre. He has dealt with the problem of illegal migration from East Pakistan/Bangladesh for a very long time, which also involved detection and deportation of foreign nationals. During the Bangladesh War of Liberation (1971), he trained two batches of the Mukti Bahini for which he was awarded the prestigious Friends of Liberation War Honour by the Government of Bangladesh in 2013. Years later, he became actively engaged with the historic Assam Movement and was imprisoned twice for his involvements. Bhattacharyya is also a columnist and author of several novels and socio-economic treatises. He is also passionately engaged with angling and rose gardening.
