Duty, Dissent, and Destiny This is the extraordinary life story of Ajit Jogi, who rose from an obscure forest village in the tribal heartland of central India and went on to shape the political destiny of the newly-created state of Chhattisgarh as its first chief minister. Born in Jogidongri, surrounded by forests, hardship, and quiet resilience, he learnt early lessons in discipline and survival. As a young IAS officer, he faced communal tension in Indore, confronted powerful industrial interests in Shahdol, and earned a reputation for his decisive, field-driven administration. Then came the turning point—a move from civil service to national politics. In Delhi, he navigated turbulent coalition years, internal party struggles, media scrutiny, and courtroom battles over identity and legitimacy. Chosen to lead Chhattisgarh when it was carved out of Madhya Pradesh, he built the state from the ground up, negotiating power assets, stabilising finances, reforming paddy procurement, strengthening tribal welfare, and confronting insurgency in its most volatile districts. His life was marked by sharp political contests, legal challenges, and moments of both triumph and isolation. Yet, through it all, he remained rooted in the experiences of his childhood—the forest, the field, and the village classroom. Unvarnished and direct, this saga penned in the initial months of the COVID-19 lockdown, offers a rare insider’s account of governance, ambition, and endurance in modern India. A story of power earned, power contested, and power tested.

Ajit Jogi

Ajit Pramod Kumar Jogi was a distinguished statesman, administrator, and visionary leader whose life was dedicated to public service. An engineer by education and a lawyer by qualification, he began his career in the Indian Police Service (IPS) before joining the Indian Administrative Service (IAS). His commitment to serving people eventually led him into politics, where he held several important positions, including Member of Parliament, Member of the Legislative Assembly, and Chief Spokesperson of the All India Congress Committee. In 2000, he created history by becoming the first Chief Minister of the newly formed state of Chhattisgarh. Widely respected for his leadership, determination, and concern for the welfare of the people, he played a significant role in shaping the state’s early development. Throughout his life, he inspired others with his belief that dreams have the power to transform lives, leaving behind a legacy of hope, perseverance, and public service.
