An urgent and overdo call for a constitution for the internet, to protect us from a host of shocking abuses of our basic individual rights that are running rampant, by a leading specialist on web privacy issues.
When Lori Andrews began researching the ways in which our web activity -- especially on social networks --is being used to "mine" data about us and use it against us, she discovered that 35 percent of people rejected for jobs were turned down because of information about them found on social networks; in divorce disputes, e-mails and social network postings are routinely introduced as evidence and as many as one in five divorce petitions includes social network postings; robbers are using postings about vacations to figure out when to break into people's homes; and schools are routinely performing surveillance on both teachers and students by downloading the web activity.
What we need, she argues, is to extend our constitutional rights to the domain of the web. In this book she first describes the general problem of the abuses and why a constitution for the web is needed, and then she writes a more specific chapter about each of the basic rights that are being violated.
