This title belongs to a tradition of tragic romances of ancient times. It is the drama of tragic young love ending in suicides, set against the backdrop of a vicious family feud. Shakespeare set the scene of the play in Verona, Italy. Juliet, a Capulet, and Romeo, a Montague, fall in love at a masked ball. The couple is married covertly by Friar Laurence because the two noble families are enemies. After Tybalt, a Capulet, slays Romeo’s friend Mercutio in a dispute, Romeo kills Tybalt and is exiled to Mantua. Juliet's father now wants her to marry Count Paris. When Juliet goes to Friar Laurence for advice, he gives her a potion that makes a person seem dead. He proposes that she take it and that Romeo save her later; Juliet agrees. Romeo hears of Juliet's apparent death and returns to Verona, not knowing about the Friar's plan. After killing Count Paris, he finds Juliet in a burial vault. He kisses her one last time and kills himself with poison. Juliet awakens to find Romeo dead, and kills herself.
