Sikkim was ruled by Chogyal Palden Thondup Namgyal, at the time when it was taken over as the twenty second Indian state. The author himself was a close friend of the 12th Chogyal, but the book details the story with an unassuming tone of a brilliant writer. The book also introduces the Chogyal, his American queen Hope Cooke, his charismatic Kazini among others. The book had first appeared in 1984, but only a few had the chance to read the authentic account of the protective kingdom becoming a part of democratic India. This revised edition is no less than a thriller, for the way the transition is accounted is captivating. The documents and sources referred by the author are seldom cited ones by other books. Smash and Grab attempts to analyse law and politics of the state in the context of the twentieth century India.
